Why is it that books on the top of the bestseller lists don't always live up to my expectations? The latest example is The Memory-Keeper's Daughter, which has been atop the lists for a long time. So I had to see what the buzz was about. It took weeks to struggle through the book. It just didn't click with me. Why was that? I wondered. Finally, I thought I had the answer: I just didn't like any of the major characters. All of them had tragic flaws bigger than a bedsheet. The main character, the Memory-Keeper himself. is a first-class jerk, but his wife is hardly a saint, either. The premise of the book is highly creative, but it still has credibility problems. In short, The Memory-Keeper's Daughter reminded me a lot of the much ado about another highly popular book, The DaVinci Code. |
