I've gotten a lot of "gosh that sounds DARK, now I HAVE to read it" feedback from my Sunday review of Dani Shapiro's Black & White. Music to a reviewer's ears, of course, and this has certainly been a book I haven't been able to stop pondering. To wit: Although it's primarily a mother-daughter book, about a photographer whose nude photos of her young child tear the family apart (while simultaneously making the photographer both celebrated and rich), I think the book's major flaw is its scant treatment of the child's father. He makes a heartfelt fuss at a gallery opening when he first realizes the nature of his wife's photos, declaring "This is going to stop!" but then is scarcely heard from again. It's a terrific read, but it could have been even better if Ms. Shapiro had made more of the paternal aspect. In retrospect, I keep wondering what happened to Dad. |
