Audio book review: "Born Standing Up"

From staff writer Mary Ellen Botter, here's a look at the audio book version of Steve Martin's memoir:

That wild and crazy guy who broke up audiences as the 1970s’ most successful stand-up comedian shows a side of himself that few imagine. Behind the manic, disjointed routines that made Steve Martin famous is an intellectual, a creative practitioner of language as self-analytical and honest with himself (and us) as many celebs refuse to be.

Martin carries listeners from his backyard magic tricks as a kid through jobs at Disneyland (two miles from his family’s California home) and Knotts Berry Farm, into years of struggle to identify and shape his comedy, then on to fame’s summit and the journey beyond into acting and writing.

The comic describes the depressions that sapped his well of wit, his estrangement from his parents and sister and his continuing search for what makes people laugh. He barely addresses his love life. This is no kiss-and-tell screed. Neither is it a laugh-a-minute howlfest. Rather, it’s a truly interesting trip into the creative process.

As reader, Martin has no reason to snark, “Well, excuuuuuse me!” as he did in his stand-up act (and a decade of the in-crowd echoed). His tones are soothing, his pronunciation clear. Twang has left this Waco-born Texan.
