Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia, has won the hearts of Oprah and women nation-wide, but according to USA Today there may be a backlash. Have you already read it? Tell us if, as Entertainment Weekly says, you "Love it [or] Loathe it?" If not, buy the book and decide for yourself. In my earlier post, I described a tale Isabel Nathaniel told about a book recommendation with a 25-year lifespan. She's graciously sent it along to share. COMPLICATED RECOMMENDING In 1972 I was in a poetry workshop in NY. It was led by Erica Jong. We met not at the 92nd St. Y that sponsored the workshop, but at Erica’s dining room table in her Central Park West apartment. At the first meeting, she had some of her own books on the table to recommend to us. One of them was Robert Graves’ "The White Goddess," which is his exploration of the early European goddess of Birth, Love, and Death, the pagan patroness of the white magic of poetry. The book had been published in 1948. In 1972 it was out of print, so I found a used, first edition for $3.00 at The Gotham Book Mart on W. 47th Street. The problem with it was that a previous owner had signed not only his name in red ink, but underlined, all through the book in red ink, things that I wouldn’t have chosen to underline, and even wrote shorthand scribbles in the margins in red ink. Despite all the red ink, I treasured the book through the years, brought it to Texas with me, and still have it. The entry ""Good Reads" -- a true story" has no entry tags. Just last night, Tom Dodge was talking about how "Hecho en Tejas" was one of his favorite books of 2007. Today, word comes that the book will be celebrated 7 p.m. May 3 at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas. Scheduled to attend are authors Tony Díaz, Joel Garza, Dagoberto Gilb, Tammy Gomez, Christine Granados, Macarena Hernández, Diana López, Rolando Hinojosa-Smith, as well as musicians Santiago Jimenez Jr. and David Garza. Here's a promotional video set to Mr. Garza's very cool music: The entry ""Hecho en Tejas" in Dallas" has no entry tags. |
