Sneak peek at Sunday's reviews

Check out the books pages of GuideLive on Sunday, and here's what you'll find:

If you think cheerleaders, even in Texas, are more about social status than about sport, "Cheer: Three Teams on a Quest for College Cheerleading's Ultimate Prize," by Kate Torgovnick, may change your mind.

If you think serious writers don't tackle noir, read about "The Silver Swan," by Benjamin Black. (Check back Sunday for an excerpt and a video link.)

If you think cartooning is for wimps, check out "Bill Mauldin: A Life Up Front," by Todd DePastino.

And if you still haven't made up your mind about who killed JFK, consider "The Road to Dallas: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy," by David Kaiser, and gain insight from
"The Echo From Dealey Plaza," by Abraham Bolden.(We'll start a thread for discussion of those, to be sure.)

Coming soon: "Herr der Ringe, mit dem Tanzenundsingenmachen kleiner Manner"?

Bad news, Hobbit fans: The stage musical of "The Lord of the Rings" will close in London on July 19, 13 months after opening.
It will have lasted 492 performances. With a budget of $24 million, it is one of the most expensive musicals ever produced, according to The Associated Press.
But don't go jumping into the fires of Mount Doom just yet. Producers are working on ... a German adaptation!
Because if there's one thing the world has been demanding more than singing Hobbits, it's singing German Hobbits.

"Bit Lit": Why didn't I think of that?

I just received my favorite press release of the year, thus far, from Pocket Books regarding a new book by Chris Salvatore. Gotta love the plot: "In Necking, a publicist to the underworld battles an evil Master Vampire who's after her to-die-for Rolodex."

Did you ever doubt that the underworld must have a totally Type A, Ari Gold-esque publicist? Of course it does.

But my favorite part of the press release was the headline, proclaiming this a book for those who enjoy "bit lit." I'd never heard that phrase for before, but I really, really, really wish I could take credit for it.
