Spotted on Maud Newton's blog: California writer Jim Ruland's recipe for Irish tamales.

I am hopeful this post might unleash a torrent of Texas-themed literary recipes because:

a) I am sure that when it comes to tamales, some Texas writer out there knows he or she can do better, and;

b) It is close to lunchtime and I am feeling ... peckish.

* Black Widow, by Randy Wayne White (Putnam, $24.95). Mr. White's 15th Doc Ford thriller (after 2007's Hunter's Moon) tells a back story relating to the murder of Ford's parents.
* Charley's Web, by Joy Fielding (Atria, $24.95) chronicles a newspaper columnist's interviews with a convicted child killer.
* The Dark Tide, by Andrew Gross (Morrow, $25.95) examines the aftermath of an explosion in Grand Central Terminal that kills a hedge-fund trader.
* Dead Heat, by Joel C. Rosenberg (Tyndale House, $24.99) follows the Secret Service's attempts to stop a presidential candidate's assassination.
* Seen It All and Done the Rest, by Pearl Cleage (One World/Ballantine, $25) follows an actress as she copes with reaching middle age.
* The Woman Who Wouldn't, by Gene Wilder (St. Martin's, $19.95). The beloved actor and screenwriter's second novel, set in 1903, stars a young concert violinist named Jeremy Webb, who one day goes from accomplished adagios with the Cleveland Orchestra to having a complete breakdown on stage.
* Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet, by Jeffrey D. Sachs (Penguin Press, $27.95) offers solutions to current and future world problems.
* The Translator: A Tribesman's Memoir of Darfur, by Daoud Hari (Random House, $23) explores a local translator's efforts to inform the world about Darfur's genocide.
