Of Texas, and nature, and writing

"Writing a Wide Land: A Conference on Texas Nature Writing" drew more than a hundred people to the University of North Texas today. I was one of them, for the first half at least.

The idea of a conference on nature writing anywhere in North Texas struck me as novel, because frankly, I've not lived anywhere that was less in touch with nature than North Texas. That's not meant as an insult; it's just a reality. As is often noted, the lack of geographic limits to the sprawl of Dallas and Fort Worth is one of the things that keeps the economy moving here. People do not move here for the scenic beauty. Land is just another thing to be bought and sold.

But the speakers I heard reminded me not only that Texas, as a whole, is indeed a place of natural beauty, but that Texas needs more writers to convey that, if it wants to save what is left.

Here's a look at what we'll be writing about Sunday in GuideLive.

Plano-raised author Stefan Merrill Block has won national attention for is debut novel "The Story of Forgetting." (Watch for an excerpt Sunday as well.)

Meg Wolitzer's novel "The Ten-Year Nap" is a wake-up call for women.

Got a life story to tell? Natalie Goldberg's "Old Friend From Far Away" can help.

And a monumental talent gets a fitting biography in A. David Moody's "Ezra Pound: Poet -- A Portrait of the Man & His Work Volume I: The Young Genius,1885-1920."

Plus -- Judy Alter on books about Dallas women.

I slipped away this morning to catch the first half of "Writing a Wide Land -- Writing a Wide Land: A Conference on Texas Nature Writing."

More on that later. But first, a reminder that you can catch a Webcast of speaker Robert Michael Pyle this evening at 6 p.m. Central time at the conference homepage.

I'm not saying life won't continue
with its cups and its keys and rivers to cross
but sorrow will always buzz, iridescent
on black-veined wings...

-Ann Howells, "Without Warning"

Howells, a longtime member of the Dallas Poets Community and managing editor of its journal, Ilya's Honey, recently published a new chapbook, Black Crow in Flight.
