Texas Book Festival donation

As the state's librarians convene in Dallas, the Texas Book Festival today is announcing that it is awarding more than $200,000 in grants this year to 72 public libraries.

The festival has awarded more than $2 million in library grants since 1996.

In a state that traditionally has struggled to properly support its libraries, every little bit helps.

Meanwhile, fans of the festival can mark their calendars and book their hotel rooms for Nov. 1 and 2.

UPDATE: Here's a look at the local libraries that will benefit. Spokesperson David Shaw says via e-mail that the Dallas area will get about $22,500 or a little more than 10 percent of the statewide total..

Legacy Books -- and is working at a book store all that?

I suppose this could be a sign of hard times for English majors. Or it could be a sign of the Dallas area's hunger for a new bookstore.

But a spokeswoman for Legacy Books' Teri Tanner tells me that Teri had 600 e-mails, plus phone calls, some to her home, after plans for the store were unveiled last week. And many of them were from people seeking jobs.

We'll have more on the store -- and some developments at the non-independent but still enjoyable local chain stores -- in months to come.

But that number leads me to ask any current or former booksellers out there: Should we tell these folks what they're in for?

Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day, sponsored by the Academy of American Poets. (aside: This could be the start of some really bad jokes.)

Here's a line from the one I'm carrying:

I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous, or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular, but because it never forgot what it could do.
