To mark the Bard's deathday, MSN.com has a fun quiz on the life and times of William Shakespeare. With the help of some good guessing, I got 8 out of 10 right. And here's a bonus question: What other eminent European writer died on the same date as Shakespeare? Go to the jump for the answer... Answer: Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, died in Madrid on April 23, 1616. William Shakespeare also died on that date, but -- ay, there's the rub -- not on the same day. Britain was still using the Julian calendar in 1616, whereas Spain had already adopted the Gregorian calendar. Britain used the Julian calendar until 1752, whereupon a correction of 11 days was made to synchronize days and dates. |
