McClellan's father had issues with his presidential boss, too

mclellanbook.jpgStaff Writer Michael Granberry e-mails these observations:

The big buzz in Washington these days is Scott McClellan's new book, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception. Mr. McClellan served as President Bush's press secretary from 2003 to 2006, but what I haven't seen mentioned in any articles or reviews so far is the parallel to his father's book, released in 2004, during his son's tenure in the White House. Barr McClellan once served as an aide to President Lyndon B. Johnson, who, like Mr. Bush, was a president from Texas. The elder McClellan arched a few eyebrows when his own book came out. Its title? Blood, Money & Power: How L.B.J. Killed J.F.K.

Charles Dickens' desk meets great expectations at auction

2008dickensdesk.jpgSorry; the pun was mandatory.

The desk in question -- Charles Dickens did actually use it to write Great Expectations -- sold for $850,000, the Associated Press reports. The money will go to the Great Ormond Street children's hospital in London. Nicely enough, Dickens was a close friend of the hospital's founder and spoke at its first fundraising dinner in 1858.

And the price is really quite a bargain, when you figure it included Dickens' chair as well.

Don't be discouraged if you missed out, though. I am willing to part with my own personal desk and chair for 90 percent off that figure. Who knows what those will be worth in 150 years? Post offers on the blog. No reasonable offer refused.
