The Dallas Public Library, The Writer's Garret and many others are celebrating "The Big Read" in Dallas. This is a National Endowment of the Arts program "designed to restore reading to the center of American culture." This month, it will focus on Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya. A kickoff event takes place 6 p.m. Saturday at the Latino Cultural Center, 2600 Live Oak St. with a lecture by Dr. Spencer R. Herrera from New Mexico State University. Closing the kick-off will be a theatrical solo performance in Spanish of the character Ultima adapted and performed by actress and director Patricia Urbina. All kinds of events are on the schedule I was sent; I've pasted them below for your convenience. The entry "The Big Read in Dallas on Saturday" is tagged: big read , bless me ultima , Rudolfo Anaya Word comes through the grapevine of the 2008 Hardboiled Heroes and Cozy Cats Mystery Writing Conference taking place next Friday and Saturday at the Holiday Inn Select North Dallas, 2645 LBJ Freeway. Authors Jan Burke, Jeffrey Marks, Victoria Laurie, Anne Wingate and Deborah LeBlanc are scheduled to attend, according to the conference Web site. The conference is hosted by the Southwest Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America. Registration fee is $125 for members, $135 for non-members. At stake: $12,000 in prizes and the envy of your literate friends. Yours truly will be helping judge this year -- I'm hoping for lots of great material to make my job difficult once again.
