June 19, 2008We rarely delve into the business side of things here at Texas Pages, but I'm calling attention to this column by Sara Nelson of Publishers Weekly for a couple of reasons: 1) She takes a look at the chaos in the book business these days -- something that newspapers and a whole lot of other industries can relate to -- and sees reason to hope. We can all use some of that. 2) She'll be speaking at the Writers League of Texas in Austin this weekend, which is where I'll be. If you're a blog reader and attending the panel, be sure to say hi. And if you're not there, check back later. I hope to come back with interesting reports. The entry "Books: Sara Nelson's reasons to hope" is tagged: publishing , Sara Nelson , Writers League of Texas
I, too, like to go to Colorado on vacation, and I like to read something about Colorado, or at least about the American West, while I'm there. It's like being in Wichita Falls for the bike ride in August and reading Larry McMurtry ... or maybe that's the only comparison between Wichita Falls and Colorado anybody's going to make. For Colorado, I like to go into independent bookstores and get recommendations. I finally did read All the Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy, after hearing about it several times. And, if you were female, I'd recommend the novels of Sandra Dallas, who lives in and writes about Colorado. To get yours started, here are a few professional thoughts: Jennifer Reese of the National Book Critics Circle has When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson atop her vacation list, and several other interesting suggestions. [The link is now repaired; apologies to those who tried it earlier.] Bookrerporter.com is featuring a different title each week in its Beach Bag of Books. John Marshall of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has something for everyone on his summer reads list. The entry "Summer reading lists -- a starter kit" is tagged: summer reading lists
Spotted on Maud Newton's blog: The Front Porch Journal, a journal of the Texas State MFA program, has video of Mary Gaitskill reading at the Katherine Anne Porter House. "A fitting locale, I think;" says Maud. " the foxy, mercurial, ever-prevaricating Texan author would make an interesting subject for Gaitskill should she turn her hand to biography."
