While I stepped away, the folks at the Nasher Salon announced a pretty big event for July 17: Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Here's an interview with them we published earlier this year.

I'll have some reports of actual literary value (I hope) in coming days. But let's get it on the record that: a) The Writers' League of Texas 2008 Agents and Editors Conference was, according to everyone I spoke with there, quite a success. Would be-writers were happy to gain insight on the publishing world and feedback on their work. Agents and editors were happy with the overall quality of the writers they were meeting. And I was happy to have been invited and, based on the fact that nobody hurled anything harsher than a sharp question at me during the panel I participated in, think things went OK. b) If you are planning a pitch to any of the agents who attended, you might want to wait a day or two. I think some of them will need some time to recuperate from last night's Skyrocket concert. Which is less of a commentary on the capacity of New York's literati for Texas-style entertainment than it is a plug for this band, which is so good it actually made people feel cool about standing around and listening to covers of the Bee Gees, ABBA and Kiss. If you are old enough to have owned any of these bands on vinyl, or will admit to knowing the lyrics to "Boogie Fever" -- you need to set aside your novel for one night and go see them.
