I, too, like to go to Colorado on vacation, and I like to read something about Colorado, or at least about the American West, while I'm there. It's like being in Wichita Falls for the bike ride in August and reading Larry McMurtry ... or maybe that's the only comparison between Wichita Falls and Colorado anybody's going to make. For Colorado, I like to go into independent bookstores and get recommendations. I finally did read All the Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy, after hearing about it several times. And, if you were female, I'd recommend the novels of Sandra Dallas, who lives in and writes about Colorado. Another Colorado writer is Kent Haruf, who wrote a favorite of mine, Plainsong, about eastern Colorado. And I picked up One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd, by Jim Fergus, at the highly recommended Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver, so I still need to read that. Also on my reading wish list is A Year in Provence, by Peter Mayle, although I'm not likely to be so lucky as to visit France this summer. |
