I heard directly from Doug Valentine, whose video (mentioned here, but this link should take you directly there) still needs to be viewed by anyone who has used or abused a librarian, or just read "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse." Doug says he and his wife (and co-star) Karen will both be working at McKillop Elementary in Melissa next year. (She has been in Melissa for two years, and he has spent the past four in the Richardson system.) I asked him how the video came about. He writes: He and his wife have been putting together "little instructional videos for our respective schools" for about four years. This year they decided to enter some national contests had been doing well. " When the Librareo contest came around we collaborated on an idea. The rules were that the song had to be original or in the public domain, no more than two minutes long, and reflect your love for a book or author. My wife Karen thought that the William Tell Overture would be a good song and I put together the lyrics and the situation which is an all too common one in my library world." The results have been great, he says. "We are going to the ALA convention this weekend in Anaheim to 'premiere' the video and of course we will accept the cash prize for us and for my library." Congrats, and keep this project in mind the next time someone tries to tell you that librarians are humorless. (Here is a second link to the video if the neighborsgo video site is giving you problems.) |
