With summer officially here, it's time to get serious about summer reading lists. To get yours started, here are a few professional thoughts: Jennifer Reese of the National Book Critics Circle has When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson atop her vacation list, and several other interesting suggestions. [The link is now repaired; apologies to those who tried it earlier.] Bookrerporter.com is featuring a different title each week in its Beach Bag of Books. John Marshall of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has something for everyone on his summer reads list. Me? Well, I have decided to put War and Peace aside for another season. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle looks promising. I'm trying to track down a spare copy of Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. White Mary by Kira Salak caught my attention. Vacation ends up being a bad time for me to read, but I do love to find appropriate books to take with me on my journeys. (Last year I brought "East of Eden" along with visions of reading it as I drove up the California coast with the minivan full of kids -- and maybe finding a way to visit the Steinbeck Center in Salinas. Things did not go as planned. I made it maybe to Chapter Three, and sort of waved at the museum exit as we drove past.) Ever the optimist, I may try to to take Ron McLarty's Art in America with me to Colorado this summer. I'll try to juggle those with that Dashiell Hammett and save some room in the schedule for whatever surprises pop up between now and fall. How about you? E-mail entry: |
