July 15, 2008Fans of Water for Elephants, the breakout bestseller by Sara Gruen, will be glad to know she has another book coming soon. This one also is for animal lovers -- it was inspired by Ms. Gruen's fascination with the bonobo ape. Emma Sweeney, the New York literary agent who sold Water for Elephants to Algonquin Books. Emma spoke earlier today to a Maggiano's NorthPark luncheon group organized by her aunt, publicist Julia Sweeney of Dallas. She also mentioned that the movie rights to Water for Elephants have been sold, though the project's still in pre-production. According to Emma, Ape House will be published by Spiegel & Grau in the spring of 2009. The entry "Sara Gruen's next book goes ape" is tagged: Books , Emma Sweeney , Water for Elephants I didn't mention this at the time, but Dallas writer Melanie Wells was the secret enabler who connected the gang at the Writers' League of Texas conference with the fab-tastic Austin cover band Skyrocket. (Between them and the pending release of Mamma Mia!, ABBA might be stuck in my brain until fall.) Melanie is actually good friends with singer/songwriter Trish Murphy, a member of Skyrocket. And -- here comes the actual literary connection to all of this -- you can see them along with Dallas writers Will Clarke and Harry Hunsicker 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17 at the Bar Belmont, 901 Fort Worth Avenue at Sylvan. That's not your only chance to learn about her this week: The entry "It's a good week for Melanie Wells fans" is tagged: Harry Hunsicker , Melanie Wells , Trish Murphy , Will Clarke , Writers' Bloc |
