Houston's Brazos Bookstore has found a way to let customers who say they love locally owned bookstores to put their money where their reading glassses are. As reported in Publishers Weekly, more than a dozen investors contributed a minimum of $10,000 to purchase the store in 2006. Some customers felt left out, though. So a new "Friends of Brazos" program allows them to contribute as little as $50. In return, they get discounts and access to private author events. The more you give, the better the perks. Who knew that public radio could provide a free enterprise model for keeping the neighborhood bookstore alive? Although I have to say, the moment a perky clerk comes up to me and says, "We're looking for 100 customers this hour to pledge a minimum of $35 to keep this bookstore on the air!" is the day I switch to Amazon permanently. |
