I was going to add a few thoughts about Why I Came West, t by Rick Bass. But Bryan Woolley's review says it all for me. I remember tearing through one of Mr. Bass' earlier Yaak Valley books at a friend's house a decade or so ago; I stayed up until 2 a.m. savoring his descriptions of the Montana winter. And recently, I relished stories from The Lives of Rocks as well. (We still have a marvelous story-length excerpt posted from that.) When you are capable of writing so well, the expectations are high. And he didn't meet them with Why I Came West. In his defense, I think it's hard for us in the Dallas area, where "wilderness" means "I can't see a Neiman's from here," to grasp the ferocity of the battle he has been fighting. Take a look at this review from Newwest.net, then see the comments readers have posted. I would hate to walk into in that Montana bar without a canister of bear spray handy. . |
