August 3, 2008The world has lost one of its great authors and dissidents. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who brought the world's attention to the horrors of the Russian Gulag (the Soviet labor-camp system) died of heart failure at age 89, at his home in Moscow. Mr. Solzhenitsyn, a novelist, dramatist and historian, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1970. He was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974, and returned to Russia in 1994. His best-known works include One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962), a book that can be read in one sitting and will forever change how you see the world, and the three-part Gulag Archipelago (1973-78). To get a peek into this great mind at work, read his Nobel Prize speech. The entry "Alexander Solzhenitsyn dead at 89" has no entry tags.
