The Bookworm, "a family owned and operated independent bookstore for all ages and interests" in Frisco, is closing no later than tomorrow, owner David Norwood said this morning. The store, which had been open since August 2006, is a victim of hard financial times, he said. "The biggest contributing factor is the impact of the economy on people's shopping habits," Mr. Norwood said. When the store opened, he said, he thought the store's location amid a growing, demographically appealing region would be enough to support them. There's still growth in the area, but his business has been declining. Mr. Norwood said that once the difficult task of closing shop is wrapped up, he'll probably resume his 25-year career in software development. "I've also got a couple years of running a business under my belt" now, he says. And bookseller to the end, he's encouraging his customers to support a fellow indie. "For what it's worth, I'm trying to encourage as many people as we can to visit Legacy Books," in Plano. If someone is going to drive to a bookstore, he says, it should be one that's locally owned.
On a personal note -- David has been a regular contributor to our weekly list of local best-sellers and was always a pleasure to deal with. Good luck, David, |
